Metronidazole should be administered with caution to patients with central nervous system disorders. Severe convulsive seizures and peripheral neuropathy, characterized by numbness or paresthesia of the extremities, have been reported.61 Infrequently, neuropathy has been noted with penicillin formulations, but when present, it is usually associated with high doses of parenteral penicillin.34,37
